When the medal was issued in 1973, Maariv was still Israel’s largest daily newspaper, known for its independence and high standards. Since then it has gone downhill, especially since the 1990s. In 1973 Maariv celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The medal’s obverse features the famous caricature by Dosh (Kariel Gardosh) of a boy’s head wearing a “tembel” hat -symbolizing Israel, with a stylized number 25 in the center.
On the reverse appears a stack of newspapers, on top of which appears the Hebrew text “Maariv, the newspaper with the widest circulation in Israel”. In English “Maariv daily”. On the rim, the dates “5708-5733 15.2.48-15.2.73”.
