Israel - Cameo of Love - 999 silver, 60 g, 50 mm.
State Medal, 1992/5752
The enchanting artwork of Yossel Bergner graces this medal. Bergner was born in Vienna in 1920 and spent his youth in Warsaw. At age 17 he emigrated to Australia, thus escaping the fate of many European Jews. Notwithstanding, Warsaw and the Holocaust leave their marks on his work. Bergner served in the Australian Army during the war. After the war, he received a scholarship to study art in Melbourne. He later spent several years in Paris, where he claims to have discovered color. After a period in Canada, he immigrated to Israel. In 1980, he received the Israel Prize for Art.
