Judaica / Zionism – Seven hundred years of Altneushol Synagogue in Prague, 1290-1990 – bronze, 60mm
The oldest site in the Jewish town in Prague and the oldest synagogue in Europe. This is the main synagogue of the Jewish community in Prague for more than 700 years. Evidence of the important status of the Jewish community in Prague at that time. Originally called the New or Great Synagogue, it was only after the establishment of other synagogues at the end of the 16th century that it became known as the "Old-New" (Altneuschul).
The oldest surviving synagogue. It has a rectangular structure with a large saddle roof and Gothic gables, whose thick outer walls are supported by bastions. In the peripheral walls you can see recently uncovered niche frames, which were used in the past to store prayer books and requirements. The main room is lit by many bronze chandeliers from the 16th to 18th century, and brass mirrors hang on the walls. The interior decoration of the old-new synagogue is completed by a large flag, symbolizing the important position of the Jewish community in Prague. Used since the end of the 15th century, it was restored to its current form by Emperor Charles VI in 1716. In the center of the banner is a pointed Star of David with a Jewish hat, which was the official symbol of the Jewish community in Prague. From the 15th century onwards.
