Sabbath Candlesticks
Judaic Art Coin, 1992/5753
A Jewish home brings in the Sabbath by lighting candles and it is the privilege of the wife to perform this mitzva. Cleaned and polished in honor of the Sabbath, a warm glow descends upon the home. Thus the Sabbath Queen, as the Sabbath is popularly known, is welcomed. The three-branched Sabbath candelabrum on this coin is from 18th century Poland and is part of the Israel Museum Collection. The modern, cube-shaped candelstick on the coin obverse is the work of artist Zelig Segal.
Obverse: The face value, 1 NEW SHEQEL on the Silver B.U. Coin, 2 NEW SHEQALIM on the Silver Proof Coin, in Hebrew and English. Left is a modern, cube-shaped Sabbath Candlestick. In the upper left-hand border is the word "ISRAEL in Hebrew, Arabic and English.
Reverse: Three-branched Sabbath candelabrum from Poland, 18th century, Israel Museum Collection. Left, center is the mint year 1992 and right, the corresponding Hebrew mint year 5753. Above the candelabrum, in the center, is the Israel State Emblem. Decorative shapes adorn the coin around the border
