And There Was Light (Agam)
"And there was Light" is a unique medal designed by artist Yaacov Agam. It is an original work of art in a medal, the first combination of its kind consisting of a hardened, solid metal with light-radiating matter. Hold the medal up opposite a light focus, and the "And there was Light" medal lives up to its name – a dazzling Star of David appears like magic from the transparent inset in the center of the medal. Agam gives the Star of David concept a unique spiritulal content. For the first time, the words "A light unto the nations" receive a truly visual significance.
Obverse: In the center, transparent light- adiating matter in which a dazzling Star of David appears when held against a source of light. Hebrew verse: "And there was Light", (Genesisl :3). Semi-circular curves characterizing the candelabrum, expressing "the world above and the world below", "branches and roots".
Reverse: Spiral, expressing contraction and the secret of "Zimsum". Signature of artist.
Edge: Emblem of the State of Israel. The words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. The silver medals bear the mark "silver 999". The 24 m.m. gold medals bear the mark G750 and the 38 m.m. gold medals bear G916.6
