Penny mule token issued by Ruben Josephs, Van Diemen’s Land toll gate operator, 1855. minted by W.J. Taylor of London.
Obverse: toll gate with legend around "New Town Toll Gate * R. Josephs *". Reverse: ‘Justice’ seated on wool bale & commerce symbols; legend "Van Diemen’s Land | 1855". Josephs was a convict transported to Australia in 1827, gained his freedom in 1841, and won tender to operate New Town toll gate for 3 years in 1852: issued these ‘Toll Gate’ tokens to profit from giving change to people passing through his gate.
