Solomon Schechter, head of the Jewish Theological Seminary, united in 1913 twenty-two conservative congregations, which came to be known as The United Synagogues of America. Over the years the union developed an extensive educational effort among youth and adults. It founded community centers and showed much initiative in many areas in order to raise the prestige of religion in the community. The World Council of Synagogues was organized in 1957. It aims to unite, under one auspice, all the conservative congregations to be found in some twenty-two countries.
